A Regular Column on Issues and Concerns before the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy
June 3, 2009
Dear Colleagues:
Today I returned from the Calvin Colloquim with a great appreciation for the efficacy of prayer. Our topic focused on intercessory prayer and how a typical contemporary Presbyterian church views prayer in contrast to the views held by John Calvin. It was clear to me that the last two months where I have experienced a great deal of healing are a result of the prayers of many of you. I share with you my recent note which I wrote to be shared with the presbytery following a period of extended illness.
Thanks again for your care!

Dear Colleagues and Friends:
I would like to take this opportunity to express my personal appreciation for all of the cards, notes, and
prayers that have been sent during my hospitalization and home treatment for endocarditis. It was a long
journey which I never would have anticipated, but it is one where I have found much consolation in being a
part of the body of Christ known as the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy. I have been through the “valley of
the shadow” and I am grateful for God’s sustaining presence.
Your constant support has made my recovery an exceptional one according to my medical team. On May 5,
2009, the infusion treatments came to an end and I began my rehab program. This has involved increased
walking each day, and has culminated in my being able to now tolerate well 30 minute walks. I will have
follow-up cardiac consultations and an echocardiogram, but no valve replacement is anticipated at this time.
My body is feeling stronger and I anticipate returning to work on June 1.
Yes, I have learned much about myself during this time, and also about the work that I am called to do as
your Executive Presbyter. I am learning new rhythms of what it means to live a more balanced life, one that
is faithful to my calling. I truly believe that my time for discernment during this time has taught me the value
of my “Being” as much as my “Doing!”
I look forward to sharing with you my learnings. I believe in the efficacy of prayer that has sustained my
spirit, my body, and my soul.
Words are inadequate to express my appreciation to our presbytery staff for their fine work during the last
seven weeks. Thanks go to Amy, Susan, Terry, and Faye for tending the ongoing work of the presbytery and
its churches. Special appreciation also goes out to Judy and Cindy for making special adjustments along the
way to make sure that everything was covered.
Finally, thank you for honoring the boundaries that were needed in order for me to make a full recovery.
In Christ:
Paul T. Reiter,
Executive Presbyter
