The Presbytery through the Hurricane Recovery Action Team of the Missional Outreach Ministry Team is supporting the development of a Volunteer Village in Houma, Louisiana in coordination with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.
Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery will provide the start up funds and the personnel for set up and initial operation of a volunteer housing area for up to 100 volunteers from churches around the country. Eventually groups will come to the site and stay for 1-2 weeks and work in the bayous nearby helping residents of the area recover from the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. |
Give to the Houma Project
Up to $50,000 will be needed to finance the set up and early operation of the volunteer village. Individuals and congregations are encouraged to send funds to the presbytery designated for the "Houma Project".
Register your Volunteer Work Team
Volunteer teams from our presbytery are encouraged to send groups to this site. To register teams from our presbytery go through the Volunteer Registration Center of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.
Churches with small numbers of interested volunteers can be linked together to create a multi-church team. Groups will be needed for these recovery efforts for two to three years at a minimum. In January 2006 a set-up and preparation crew visited the area and work teams began going to the area in February. |

Gifts of the Heart Kits
Can't go to the Gulf Coast? You can help locally by preparing Gift of the Heart Kits. These kits are an excellent "hands on" project for youth groups and other groups that want a tangible way to be involved. Hope-in-a-Box Kits, School Kits, and Health Kits are often the most in demand.
